Reliability
GoodStability after 6 months was .56. Split-half reliability was .80, .86 and .88 for the 3 levels.

Utility
ExcellentThe measure can be administered to groups by any professional in about 20-45 minutes (depending on age.) Instructions are clear. Items call for yes or no responses to personality and biographical statements. Some are in a “non-creative” direction. Scoring is external.

Interpretation
GoodPercentiles and NCE are based on the scores of 8000 students stratified by grade in rural, urban, and suburban settings with minority and white representation in five geographical areas. Some items seem to tap style instead of level. Some item analysis would be helpful.

Propriety
GoodThe manual does caution against misuse of the scores. It is available in Spanish.

Reviews & Related Lit
MMY #9, 1985. Dwinell, P. L.: “GIFT does not appear to be an especially strong instrument for identifying creativity; however, it is brief and easy to administer. When used with other identification procedures it can be considered useful and fairly valid for selecting students of varied backgrounds and cultures to participate in special programs which would encourage creative behavior.” MMY #9, 1985. Wright, D.: “As a self report inventory intended to assess creativity with elementary students, the GIFT appears to be alone in its class at this time. A much more extensive manual should be made available to users, with complete information on norms and reliability…[I]t is at most a screening device of unproven validity, best employed as an adjunct to more conventional methods of identifying children of exceptional ability.” Davis, G.
